RTCC v Hariom 2013

Sunday 30th June 2013
(40 overs)
RTCC 255-4
Hariom 203
RTCC won by 52 runs

209 partnership for third woicket

The warmest day of the year so far saw RTCC take on new opposition Hariom CC in the diminutive confines of Ferme Park. Skipper for the day Hugh Evans rose to his first challenge and actually won the toss, electing to bat.

The early loss of openers Clarke and Jagan brought Terry and Spee together, and with anything resembling loose bowling being ruthlessly despatched, the initiative was quickly wrested back from the fielding side.

By the midway point, the score had risen to 105-2. Aggressive running and authoritive strokeplay saw the pair continue to thrive and the score to mount. A flurry of statistical excitement followed in the closing overs as various milestones approached. Dave completed his hundred, the 200 partnership was brought up, Aymon was just an agonising two runs short of his maiden hundred when he swung into one more drive, missed, and was bowled. The partnership of 209 was clearly a new RTCC record for the third wicket, eclipsing the 137 between Terry and Birchall in 1996. Scurrying through the records later showed it was in fact a new highest RTCC partnership for any wicket.

A few overs later the innings ended on an impressive 255-4, not a mammoth total perhaps by Ferme Park standards, but more than enough to dispirit a fielding side who had been run ragged for the best part of three hours in the heat of the afternoon.

Kash and Martin opened the bowling as Hariom began their reply, and some very tidy bowling was rewarded with two wickets apiece, while the scoring rate began to fall inexorably behind the required rate. After that, skipper Evans was able to explore all his bowling options at his leisure, and though Sunny and Laxman made defiant knocks of 30-odd, the wickets fell at regular intervals. Alan Duckworth picked up two wickets on debut, while Matthias Winter snagged two catches, and it was left to the batting heroes Terry and Spee to bowl the final few overs against the Hariom tailenders, picking up a wicket each to finish the job with 52 runs and an over and a half to spare.
