Isis v RTCC at Queen's College, Oxford

Friday 1st August 2014
(20 overs)
RTCC 117-5
Isis 118-2
Isis won by 8 wickets

Oxford took a 1-0 lead on our annual tour as a classy Isis side proved too strong for 9 taverners plus Sunday opponent Anton and friend in a 15 overs of 8 balls game. Chris actually won the toss and sent out Hugh and AndyC to open. Hugh elegantly drove the first ball through the covers, eliciting some excited ooohs and aahs and we settled back to enjoy the spectacle. But sadly not for long. AndyC was caught at point for a duck. He would have had to wear the duck cap had Chris not left it at home. For leaving it at home Chris would've had to wear the lei. Except he had left it at home. Hugh then miscued a slower ball into the covers and Shaun was also caught. Chris and I effected repairs with a stand of about 70 before becoming catches four and five from consecutive balls in the last over.

In reply AndyP got us off to a flyer when one opener cut straight to me at point. Unfortunately the other opener was a class act and started to find the boundary at will. Hugh did stump the number 3, but even though the batsman didn't put his foot back over the line until the bails had hit the floor the umpire said he 'couldn't be sure'. Academic perhaps, but annoying nonetheless. Perhaps we were playing some 'only catches count' rule as that's how all seven wickets fell. We did get him in the end, caught by AndyP at slip but the number 4 bashed a quick dozen, the opener finished 65 not out and the end came with an over or two to spare. The evening was then spent drinking too much beer and feasting at the mystery meat van.
